Protein Biogenesis and Engineering
We aim to understand the principles that underly protein biogenesis in the cell and to translate these insights into novel approaches for medicine and biotechnology. To achieve this, we use an interdisciplinary approach from in vitro protein biochemistry to mammalian cell biology and molecular immunology.
One major research focus in our lab are cytokines, immune signaling proteins. We investigate how cells support and control their structure formation, which underlies their biological functionality. At the same time, we use these insights to rationally design and engineer new immune-modulatory biologics and approaches for biotechnology.
Membrane proteins allow cells to interact and are the most common drug targets. Their incorrect structure formation is a widespread driver of disease. The second major research focus of our lab is thus to understand how cells produce their diverse membrane protein repertoire and which molecular machineries cells use to support and control membrane protein biogenesis.
