Structure and Function of Membrane Proteins
Our research uses nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy as a main method to investigate the structure, dynamics and function of membrane proteins. This protein class is essential for signal transduction and solute transport across a biological lipid bilayer membrane. To study these biologically important systems in a native membrane environment, we develop lipid bilayer nanodiscs, an advanced and novel membrane mimetic for structural and functional studies.
At the Bavarian NMR Center (BNMRZ) at TUM and Helmholtz Munich we use cutting-edge NMR instrumentation, a large variety of biophysical methods as well as biochemical tools and assays. We apply this toolset to investigate transport proteins in mitochondria and chloroplasts, G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) and the mechanism of intramembrane proteolysis. These systems are associated with diseases such as Alzheimer’s, cancer and neurological disorders.
