Advanced Lab Course (Fortgeschrittenenpraktikum - FoPra)
Since we do both experimental and theory work at our chair, we offer two advanced lab courses (FoPras) for students that are interested in our research. Please check if we're currently offering our FoPras on the advanced lab course overview website. Registration is only handled via TUM-Online!
FoPra 115: Pattern Formation in Cellularized Systems (BIO):
In this lab course you will study the pattern formation capabilities of the Delta–Notch signaling pathway, a mechanism of short-range communication between cells, which can be mathematically described through coupled ordinary differential equations, as well as through a cellular automaton framework. In doing so, you will practice introductory concepts in nonlinear dynamics, the implementation of numerical solving of differential equations, and programming in the Python programming language. Previous knowledge in programming is strongly recommended!
FoPra 116: Regulation of Gene Expression during Bacterial Growth Transitions (BIO):
In this course, we will investigate the adaptation of gene expression of the bacterium Escherichia coli during sequential growth on different carbon sources (glucose and lactose). For this, working in our microbiology lab, we will use photometry to determine cell density and quantify the activation of certain genes. Moreover, we will compare the experimental data to a theoretical model which predicts bacterial growth shifts.
